Getting "Downton Abbey" switch from miniseries to drama was began with the Academy, not PBS, which carries typically the most popular British drama incorporated in the "Masterpiece" series. In line with the Emmy rule book, a show can be a miniseries when it is "with various single theme or narrative, that's resolved within the piece." The go to a drama series is precipitated when there's an "ongoing theme, story and primary figures that are presented beneath the same title and possess continuity of production supervision." Mentioned "Masterpiece" professional producer Rebecca Eaton: "We know the Academy's decision. You'll find great shows inside the drama series category and will also be exciting to own 'Downton Abbey' competing together.Inch Also making the modification in the longform area up up to the more competitive drama series warmth will probably be British import "Luther," which airs on BBC America. Star Idris Elba was Emmy nommed a year ago and acquired a Golden Globe within the month of the month of january. Because the vary from promising small to drama series is unusual, it is not unequalled. Leverence listed three other shows which make the switch: In 2005, USA Network small "The 4400" was moved on for the drama series category yearly later. Also developing a category transformation was Showtime's "Sleeper Cell" in 2007 and USA's "The Starter Wife" in 2008. With both "Downton Abbey" and "Luther" inside the drama series mix, the course might have a range of top candidates. Furthermore to last year's six nominees, five that'll be competing for the next chance to repeat -- "Mad Males" (champion), "Boardwalk Empire," "The Truly Amazing Wife," "Dexter" and Wager on Thrones" -- you'll find several beginners trying to find kudos recognition. Newcomer series that will goal to obtain honours love include Showtime's "Homeland," NBC's "Smash," ABC's "Revenge," HBO's "Luck," AMC's "Hell on Wheels," FX's "American Horror Story," and USA's "Suits." Ben, Emily Of all the poor judgment that The Bachelor's Ben Flajnik has demonstrated this season, cutting Emily may have been the worst. But don't weep for Emily: She now says she thinks she dodged a bullet. We checked in with the bright, goofy epidemiologist from North Carolina to ask her how she really feels about Courtney and who she thinks Ben should end up with. On her exit:Viewers may have been surprised by Emily's ouster, but she wasn't. "To be honest, I wasn't totally shocked," she says. "When Ben pulled Courtney aside, it was the last glimmer of hope for me. I thought maybe he's finally listening to all of us. But I kind of knew at that point he was going to keep Courtney and Rachel and I were going home." The Bachelor's Chris Harrison: I never would've predicted this negative reaction to Ben Her feelings toward Courtney:"My impression of Courtney was that she was just not a nice person, no matter how you slice it or dice it," Emily says. "The comments were unprovoked, and that's what made me angry. No one else displayed that kind of behavior." If she thinks Courtney actually likes Ben:"When I watch [the show], she doesn't seem all that interested in him and what he's saying," she says. "We all cry and it was an emotionally draining situation, but I'm not sure the tears were 100 percent for him. She would turn around and say things like, 'If he doesn't give me a rose on this date, I'm going to turn around and leave.' If you're really head over heels and emotionally invested, you don't make demands like that." Harrison: Ben and Jamie's kiss was one of the most horrifying moments in Bachelor history Why Ben isn't the guy for her:"I wish he supported and encouraged me and not reacted in the way that he did [when I talked to him about Courtney]. It felt like a threat at the time," she says. "I'm looking for someone who respects me as a person, and when I have an opinion they take that to heart and can at least respond in an appropriate way." How her feelings toward Ben have changed:"My respect for him as gone down certainly since the show aired and since I've gotten perspective on things," she says. "I've had people say I dodged a bullet and others say I dodged a locomotive with a nuclear bomb strapped to it. I think for sure we're not meant to be together and I started to feel that a little toward the end, but it has been completely confirmed in my mind watching." Who Ben should choose:"Honestly, I won't be happy if Ben winds up with Lindzi, Nicki or Kasey," she says. "I think they deserve someone a little bit different and maybe a little bit more on their level and who's grounded. I think Ben and Courtney are what each other are looking for."

Supporting actor analysis
KENNETH BRANAGH "My Week With Marilyn" Why he'll win: He portrays Laurence Olivier! And with his crisp, verbal delivery and forceful physicality, he does so quite credibly, adding some needed energy to the film. Playing his fellow Shakespeare enthusiast capped a strong year that included helming commercially successful comicbook adaptation "Thor."Maybe not: Olivier never won an Oscar outside of two honorary awards, so why should Branagh? He has been nominated five times now, but his work in "Marilyn" was largely overshadowed by the actress playing the title character.Critic's quote: "Branagh has become jowly in middle age, but his looks are passably close to Olivier's. He has mastered Olivier's elegantly phrased, caressing graciousness and his indignant bellow," says David Denby, NYer.JONAH HILL "Moneyball" Why he'll win: Could appeal to younger voters since he's the only nominee here under the age of 50. Hill's "Moneyball" acting, and newly trimmed down physique, was revelatory to many who only knew him from the R-rated comedies made with Judd Apatow's troupe.Maybe not: Comic actors rarely win Oscars. Much of Hill's work in the movie comes from observing and reacting and while his timing is perfect, it's not the kind of role that generally wins an Academy Award.Critic's quote: "Hill's at his most comically froglike here and 'Moneyball' plays his presence in the holy sanctum of the scouts' office for maximum awkwardness. He's the accountant in the boxing ring," says Ty Burr, Boston Globe.NICK NOLTE "Warrior" Why he'll win: Hollywood survivor enjoying a welcome career resurgence at the age of 70 thanks to his raw depiction of an alcoholic father trying to heal old wounds. Profile currently heightened with ongoing role in HBO's critically lauded racetrack series, "Luck."Maybe not: "Warrior" had a disappointing commercial run, and its violent MMA fighting scenes may make it an unlikely screener choice for older Academy members. Some voters may be inclined to let Emmy counterparts reward him come fall.Critic's quote: "Nolte is pitch-perfect as the recovering alcoholic father. He alternates between gruff and pathetic, and while we feel for the sons he wounded emotionally, we sense his lonely anguish," says Claudia Puig, USA Today.CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER "Beginners" Why he'll win: For starters, he has won nearly every precursor leading up to the Oscars. Then there's the work itself, a graceful and dignified turn that feels like a marvelous cap to a distinguished career that has yet to be rewarded by the Academy.Maybe not: Von Sydow and Nolte split the senior vote? Too many Academy members forced to endure repeated viewings of "The Sound of Music" by their big sisters? It's hard to make a case how Plummer doesn't make it to the podium.Critic's quote: "Is Plummer skipping along the surface of the man? Anything but. He's portraying, with brilliant empathy, a man elated to be skipping along the surface of his life -- a surface on which he had never been permitted to tread," says David Edelstein, NY Magazine.MAX VON SYDOW "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" Why he'll win: Took what could have been a gimmicky role -- a mute man who communicates solely through the words "yes" and "no" inked on his palms -- and imbued it (and the movie) some much-needed gravitas. He's 82. He worked with Bergman and played chess with Death. How many more chances will he have?Maybe not: Rival Plummer is also 82. And the year's other nominated silent performers -- Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo from "The Artist" -- might have muted the distinctiveness of his work.Critic's quote: "Briefly, thanks to von Sydow's superbly evocative work (speaking volumes without words), the story loses its artifice and comes brightly alive," says Rick Groen, Toronto Globe and Mail.Eye on the Oscars: The Actor & The ActressNewbies shock 'n' roll And the nominees are:Best Actor | Best Actress | Best Supporting Actor | Best Supporting Actress Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

'Beauty" isn't concerning the Englaro situation, nor will it take sides within the problem," states Bellocchio, that has been making movies concerning the negative side of Italy's national psyche since he burst in this area in 1965 with dysfunctional family drama "Fists within the Pocket," featuring fratricide, matricide and recommended sister incest.Explaining his passion for the best-to-die subject, Bellocchio lately noted that "like a leftist, I designed a film on leftist terrorism (2003's "Hello, Evening," concerning the Red-colored Brigades' kidnapping of Italo premiere Aldo Moro). Now, like a former Jesuit school student, I wish to tackle the theme of euthanasia."Shooting is placed to begin Jan.30 in Friuli, with Cattleya and Gaul's Babe Films co-creating with RAI Cinema, that will release the pic in Italia. Beverly Kim Beverly Kim's dish on the top Chef was fit for any full - although not an evil full. The Chicago-based chef - and target of Heather's, Sarah's and Lindsay's insults - was removed on her halibut which was not symbolic an adequate amount of the challenge's evil theme, in recognition of guest judge and Snow Whitened and also the Huntsman's Evil Full, Charlize Theron. Plus: Did she feel cajolled by Louise?Top Chef's Ty-Lör: We should have been more organizedI think many people were surprised you left since Sarah undercooked her risotto, and undercooking usually will get you kicked. Had you been surprised too?Beverly: I certainly thought my dish was worthy of remaining on without a doubt. Was I surprised? I'm not sure. It is so subjective. I suppose surprised, however it would be a really tight race plus they needed to nitpick. They nitpicked my sauce. I additionally think my dish could've been more conceptually wicked. [Laughs] I'd this type of vibrant story! Snow Whitened triumphs over the negative side and everybody else's dish am dark, like, here's the wicked full! Which was some of it - I did not embrace the task. However I felt great departing on the good note. Everybody did very well. We've got a standing ovation in the idol judges. It's what it's.Have you ever consider carrying out a more dark theme or had you been dead-set around the Snow Whitened prevailing theme?Beverly: You realize, when you are caught for the reason that situation where you need to come to a decision inside a couple of minutes, I needed to perform a dish which i felt confident with. I still feel it were built with a narrative. Obviously, looking back, you decide to go, "Oh, I should have done..." But at that time, which was my intuition.Whenever you were removed, how irked had you been concerning the Quickfire? Beverly: Obviously, you replay the entire factor inside your mind and you are so upset and therefore are like, "Let's say I'd just tossed [the Grain Krispies] in mid-air plus they arrived around the plate?" There's certainly lots of that regret. A minimum of I understand I'd a very scrumptious dish. That helped me feel good. I usually try to check out things half-full and gain knowledge from the past. I'd done another run the final minute to ascertain if I possibly could have more fennel also it did not even allow it to be to the plate, so sometimes you just need to cut towards the chase and plate the dish. You will find several things I could've done that would have saved myself, but that is why it's a game title. It does not totally define you like a chef. It's circumstantial as well as summary.Do you simply exhaust time or have you overlook the Grain Krispies?Beverly: I went out time. I barely had time for you to get my seafood on. From two minutes until zero, it is going so quick. I believed which i needed some fennel for many crunch, and so i began having a panic attack and attempted to locate fennel, and that is after i went from time. I should have missed everything and set the Grain Krispies on. And won immunity!Top Chef's "Malibu" Chris describes his naked lady artA large amount of fans loved that you simply outlasted Louise and wished for you to definitely overcome Sarah and Lindsay too, depending on how badly they treated you. What happening between everyone? Have you not get on whatsoever? Beverly: It only agreed to be when you are put in this type of situation with individuals you do not know, you are basing your emotions about this person on superficial things. Had we known one another, I believe maybe a number of individuals choice wouldn't happen to be passed. And merely generally, I am not the normal chef personality. I am not noisy and abrasive and confrontational. I am a tiny bit much more of quiet type, but I am certainly a basic warrior. My whole career, I have been the keep-your-mind-lower-and-keep-working type. I simply attempt to lead by example instead of demanding respect. I certainly attempt to earn my respect which may take some time. I had been also shy finding yourself in a large group with individuals I'm not sure. Should you become familiar with me, I am noisy and incredibly boisterous. You will find occasions where I take myself seriously and occasions after i don't. I certainly can have fun, however i am serious after i arrived to your competition, understanding that I had been investing a lot time from my loved ones, as being a mother of the very youthful baby. Do you experience feeling they ganged-on you?Beverly: Yeah, however when you are inside a competition, people are likely to group along with people like themselves. I believe my personality, being shy, helped me appear meek. I can not help that! [Laughs] That's who I'm. That's something you discover with regards to you when you are there. You do not know how you are likely to be competing. Can i be noisy? Can i be quiet? I grew to become more quiet and that is certainly when individuals often gang on you. But it is a contest. You are going to try and be look great making others look bad. They are great they are all wonderful chefs. I really like these to dying. We simply did not know one another personally at that time. Top Chef's Louise: I am not really a bullyHeather does not think she was bullying you, but fans and also the other chefs did. Would you seem like she was?Beverly: I believe that term is really negative. I believe I simply separated itself just like a sore thumb at first due to my personality. I do not think it had been to call me on my work ethic and such things as that. That being stated, it's previously. I haven't any [ill will] toward them. All of us react in a different way pressurized. I believe that includes a lot related to it. It is a competition. It had been very apparent I had been not the same as everybody. [Laughs] I have learned to embrace that. It's harder to become someone I am not rather than simply to be me.You certainly had some strange and funny moments, like crashes in to the stand and apologizing for this.Beverly: Yeah! [Laughs] It had been funny. I believe I provided some comic relief for individuals. It was the way they cut and edited it. I am without a doubt cool, and that i need it so bad that sometimes you've got no treatments for the body movement! I did not even realize the way i looked. It's silly. I'm able to laugh about this because that's who I'm. I am not really a robot of the person. Competing on the program takes lots of strength. If you have a lot of minutes left and also you attempt to do some things, you bump into inanimate objects!Do you've still got that sign that states you'll win Top Chef Season 9 along with a quarter of the million dollars?Beverly: Hell, yeah! [Laughs] I understand people think it is cheesy, however i have confidence in imagining your goals. It's like shooting for that moon and reaching within the fence a minimum of. It will get you close up and keeps you focused. It comes down to thinking in yourself since it is all you've got, particularly in an aggressive atmosphere. What exactly are you so far?Beverly: I'm working very hard at Aria. We simply got a Michelin star recommendation. I am excited to return to real cooking! For me personally, this is actually the beginning of my career in this way. I have been cooking since i have was 16, but this is actually the very first time people have come across me, therefore it is a very great chance that i can grow. This really is certainly beginning of the items you will see. This complete competition has given me lots of understanding of me like a person and I have proven a great deal to myself. It's given me much more drive.

But Olbermann, the onscreen touchstone from the network, remains the main thing on its election coverage plans. "We wanted him in the get-go," Bohrman stated. "We requested him two several weeks ago. He rejected. They rejected." Bohrman rejected to elaborate on the reason behind the postponed start, that has been apparently credited to some need to pay attention to enhancing facets of 8 p.m. show "Countdown with Keith Olbermann." Current did not say positively that Olbermann would participate the policy from the next Republican primary in Sc on Jan. 24, but that's the network's expectation and hope. "That is what we desired to do two several weeks ago, once we were gearing toward Iowa and Nh, that is what you want to happen now, and that is what we should believe may happen.Inch Current executives might really happen to be surprised at how little these were instructed to discuss Olbermann and just how much they could help with their situation like a necessary anti-establishment network within the political realm. Uygur was the key firebrand, offering harsh critique of Fox News and CNN. Bohrman echoed your comments ought to, in a little less incendiary fashion, stating that the job of Current's cable news rivals was "as dysfunctional because the politics it's covering." Gore also required in the Current banner strongly, though his right one-lining was restricted to the Republican race. "It jogs my memory of the reality show where nobody will get chosen from the island," the previous v . p . stated. Contact Jon Weisman at jon.weisman@variety.com

PM Wants More Mainstream Filmmaking
David Cameron visits 007 studioNow, we usually steer clear of politics on Empire's newsfeed. It's not because we don't care or carry opinions; more because we're planning our own Equilibrium style dictatorship and don't want to play our hand too early. David Cameron, by contrast, has made no bones about opinionating on British film industry prior to Lord Smith's review on the government's film policy.Ahead of a visit to Pinewood Studios, the prime minister praised the British film industry for its "incalculable contribution to our culture", but tempered his words by claiming that British filmmakers need to be more ambitious and "aim higher"."Our role, and that of the BFI, should be to support the sector in becoming even more dynamic and entrepreneurial, helping UK producers to make commercially successful pictures that rival the quality and impact of the best international productions," said the man with Armageddon on his DVD shelf.Cameron continued: "Just as the British Film Commission has played a crucial role in attracting the biggest and best international studios to produce their films here, so we must incentivise UK producers to chase new markets both here and overseas."How this will translate into the BFI's distribution of lottery funds remains to be seen, but it's surely not good news for anyone hoping to make films like Tyrannosaur (£200k of lottery funding) or Hunger (£250k) in the years ahead.Cameron has forgotten that nobody could have predicted big box-office hits like The King's Speech and Slumdog Millionaire, Ken Loach told BBC Breakfast. "This is a travesty. If everybody knew what would be successful before it was made, there would be no problem," said the veteran filmmaker."What you have to do is fund a lot of different, varied projects and then some will be successful, some will be original, some will be creative, and you will get a very vibrant industry."Loach expressed a concern "that this review signally will fail to challenge" was "the ongoing monopoly of multiplexes where you get a very narrow range of films". Ken, we've got five words for you: The King's Speech 2: Speech Harder.
